Ah, Orokawa Bay. This anchorage\nmight not be the best-known\ncorner of New Zealand\u2019s lovely\nBay of Islands, but it sure came in handy\nduring a late spring gale. We\u2019d spent\nsix memorable months cruising New\nZealand, and it was time to head north for\nthe winter. But when the weather didn\u2019t\ncooperate, we delayed our departure while\nwaiting (and waiting, and waiting) for a\nfavorable weather window to Fiji. That\nwindow proved elusive, however, and\ninstead of heading north for the tropics,\nwe found ourselves hunkering down as\nlow after low pelted North Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

And there was no better place to\nhunker than Orokawa, with its wide, commodious\nbay and thick mud bottom that\nguaranteed our trusty Rocna anchor a\nfirm grip no matter what the elements\nthrew at us. In fact, we\u2019d never felt more\nindependent or secure than we did\nin Orokawa, thanks to a bimini rain-catchment\nsystem that funneled gallons\nof fresh water in minutes and a wind generator\nthat whirred with all the power\nthree happy sailors could use. Despite a\nfew howling, bumpy nights at anchor, our\nmemories of Orokawa are all sunny and\nbright \u2014 as bright as the brilliant rainbow\nand emerald-green\nlandscape we awoke to\nonce the storm had blown through.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
