With confirmed cases of\nthe Zika virus on the\nrise, and no vaccine\navailable, it\u2019s more important than\never to protect yourself from insects.\nZika is transmitted through\nmosquito bites and can cause fever,\nrash, joint pain, conjunctivitis\nand birth defects in babies,\namong other complications. The\nillness typically lasts several days\nto a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The Center for Disease Control\nrecommends taking \u201cadvanced\nprecautions\u201d to prevent mosquito\nbites, including covering exposed\nskin with long-sleeved shirts and\npants, using EPA-registered insect\nrepellents that contain DEET or\noil of lemon eucalyptus, sleeping\nin screened-in locations, and using\npermethrin-treated clothing and\ngear. Luckily for cruisers, clothing\ntreated with permethrin, which\nis approved by the EPA as both\nsafe for human use and effective\nat killing mosquitoes, ticks, and\nother insects, is becoming more\ncommon in the marketplace. Ex-\nOfficio\u2019s BugsAway line includes\nshirts, pants, jackets, socks, hats\nand bandannas, all treated with\npermethrin and good for 70 washes\n(do not dry-clean). Toad&Co\u2019s\nDebug products include pants\nand shirts with more casual styling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

For head and neck protection,\nboth Tilley and Buff now\noffer permethrin-treated products\nas well. Cruising World testers\nfound that the treated fabric\nfelt normal to the touch (not\nwaxy or greasy) and did not have\nany strange odors. Many of the\ninsect-repellent products on the\nmarket offer additional functionalities,\nincluding moisture wicking\nand UPF sun protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019d like to treat your own\ngear with permethrin, choose a\nsoak or spray that is specifically\nfor use on clothing and gear, such\nas Sawyer\u2019s Permethrin Premium\nInsect Repellent for Clothing or\nRepel\u2019s Permethrin Clothing and\nGear Insect Repellent. Wear gloves\nand follow directions exactly.\nIf you will be wearing both sunscreen\nand bug spray, make sure to\napply the sunscreen first, followed\nby the insect repellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\n Another way to repel bugs is with a citronella-infused wrist or ankle band such as this one by Mosquitno. Currently, areas affected by\nthe Zika virus included Central\nand South America, the Caribbean,\nthe Pacific Islands and Cape\nVerde.
